Advice for New Students

The top 20 pieces of advice for new students entering Franklin College:

  1. Get some sleep - you cannot learn in zombie mode
  2. When taking electives, try something new
  3. You have four years of weekends to have fun and unwind - take your time
  4. Study abroad - you will regret not doing it and you never know where it may take you
  5. Meet as many people as you can from as many different backgrounds as you can
  6. Get off campus and explore your community
  7. Learn good study habits early.  Get ahead and stay there.
  8. For classes where you struggle, create a study group
  9. This is not high school.  Forget all the baggage.  You will have so much fun getting to know people your first few weeks.  Step out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself to try to something new
  10. The roommate thing...do not be afraid to live in the residence halls.  You could potentially meet your new best friend.
  11. Even if its not your money, learn to appreciate both the monetary and intangible value of your education
  12. Call your parents
  13. There will be stressful times - don't panic
  14. Take responsibility for your actions.  If you mess up, own it.  Accept the consequences. 
  15. Go to faculty office hours and take help when it is offered.  You are going to need it.
  16. Join clubs and organizations.  It is a greay way to meet new people and discover a new passion.
  17. Find a good place to study
  18. VOLUNTEER
  19. Do the assigned readings.  It makes a difference!
  20. Have fun
